Skiing in Pila
Pila has a bewitching natural landscape with a magnificent view sweeping the Alps, from Mont Blanc to Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn. There are 70 kms of perfectly maintained pistes, modern ski lifts, 400+ snow cannons (meaning superb snow-making) and a tempting mix of tree-lined runs and vast, wide, open spaces.
For beginners, the Grimod bowl is a confidence-building paradise - a natural teaching ground. Intermediates should try the Liesse run which is superb, wide open and has a terrain which ranges from gentle to steep. Advanced? We challenge you to face the Wall!
Linked to the ski area of Pila by an efficient gondola (which offers mind-blowing panoramas of the surrounding peaks), Aosta is the heart of the valley and is easy to fall in love with. As you wander through the old streets of the historical centre, you will find that Aosta is a large, open-air museum, enclosed in a landscape which acts as a fascinating backdrop to the town's monuments. Home to a wealth of Roman and medieval monuments, art exhibitions and prestigious, historical buildings, Aosta/Pila provides the perfect combination of culture/winter sports. It's also a vibrant town with a distinctly Italian flavour, packed full of interesting bars (if you reckon you've got the stamina, then a visit to the Distillery is a must!), shops and delicatessens. Aosta is just that little bit different from your normal ski resort.
